Phone-free identity

Most messengers glue your account to a personal phone number. That makes discovery easy — and creates a permanent correlator across services, SIM swaps, and number recycling.

Buzzio starts differently: your public address is a Buzzio ID, and your keys come from a 12-word recovery phrase created on your device. No personal SIM is required to own a messaging identity.

How it works

  1. Install Buzzio and create an account.
  2. The app generates a random Buzzio ID and a 12-word phrase on your phone.
  3. Write both down offline. Buzzio never receives the phrase.
  4. Optionally set an @username for easier sharing — still mapped to the same Buzzio ID.
  5. On a new phone, restore with Buzzio ID + phrase (history needs a separate backup unlock if you enabled one).

Why this matters

  • Less cross-service correlation from a personal number.
  • Lower SIM-swap / recycled-number risk for messaging identity.
  • Recovery is phrase-centric on purpose — staff cannot reset your keys.

Trade-off: if you lose the phrase, devices, and any unlockable encrypted backup, those keys cannot be rebuilt. That is a privacy feature, not a bug.

Tips

  • Store the phrase offline (paper or a password manager you trust).
  • Phrase ≠ backup recovery key — new phones usually need both for full history.
  • Share Buzzio ID, @username, or QR — not a phone-book upload. Buzzio does not offer SIM contact discovery.
